He is known as a beloved by his pope's predecessor, Pope Gregory IV. Leo became a curia when Pope Gregory IV reigned. Leo was also loved by Pope Sergius II who died in 847. Leo was made a cardinal priest by Pope Sergius II.
After Pope Sergius II died, Leo was elected pope known as Pope Leo IV. When elected pope, Pope Leo IV repaired the city walls and built walls around the Vatican. People call it the City of Leonine to honor the services of Pope Leo IV.
The walls have been damaged during the Saracens attack. Pope Leo IV wanted to prevent Saracen's attacks from recurring and fortify the city with walls.
He formed an alliance against the Saracens who defeated them at the Battle of Ostia in 849. In 846, Saracens invaded Rome and destroyed the walls that surrounded the city.
Pope Leo IV also noticed the church building by beautifying churches and bringing many relics to Rome. He started a program of renewal for the clergy.

In 853 he held a synod attended by all the Roman priests. He established 42 rules to help the priests live in prayer, more diligently and joyfully.
But some are against what Pope Leo IV does, they do not want to change his way of life. Pope Leo IV gets scorned but he remains fair, patient, and humble.
Pope Leo IV dedicates himself to Jesus and His Church. He loves liturgical prayers and encourages the development of singing and liturgical music.
He continued to serve the Church joyfully until the end of his life on 17 July 855. The Church celebrates St Leo IV's party every July 17th.
